Suspension bushings on a 30 year old truck are probably shot, if you just started restoring a truck, this is going to make a huge impact. If you off-road a lot, these bushings will make a big impact as well. Repeated cycling of the suspension systems will wear the easier to replace parts first; shocks, springs, torsion bars, but the unseen wear on most these older vehicles are the bushings. The lower control arm bushings on the Montero wear with time and eventually the front suspension will feel a little loose no matter how many parts you throw at it, you'll still find some wandering or free-play in the steering wheel while driving. It will get worse the wider wheel or larger tire you run, a 33 inch tire with a 15x8 or 10 inch wide wheel will show you anything that's wrong with your suspension (by exaggerating the effects on drive-ability) You'll often find that it's due to worn and loose bushings. The rear will wear the trailing arm bushings and panhard bar bushings, if you haven't already upgraded your panhard bar to one of our heavy duty units, you can check that out here.
Polyurethane for suspension bushings are known to be pretty harsh on the ride of the vehicle. As motorsport enthusiasts we've run some pretty stiff stuff over the years, sometimes stuff that was only meant for the track, years of driving on and off road have reinforced a solid message that 'something has to give'. OEM Mitsubishi bushings are made of a superior rubber to most the aftermarket bushings, they tend to hold up the best, but they're expensive and not all of the parts are available. While they offer the softest ride out of the bunch, they're also more likely to tear or damage if you're in the long travel realm of lift kits for your Montero. There's other urethane companies that make these parts, but theirs are far too stiff for our ride. As stated before, something has to give, so either the bushings give a little, like our low durometer urethane, or your back gives a little, and as you get older that second option sounds less and less appealing. So go with OEM or a low durometer urethane if you want a comfortable ride. If you don't mind chattering your teeth and listening to your keys jingle, you can find the stiffer stuff out there. Remember if you're modifying your truck you might have already added stiffer springs and shocks to handle the constant load of bumpers, tents, racks, etc.
We've assembled basic kits for the major components. These kits are making a few assumptions, such as you're either removing your sway bars, or servicing them with standard rubber off the shelf replacements. But also, that you either own a press, have access to one, or you're willing to take the parts into a competent repair shop to have them pressed out. With the exception of the lower control arm, frame side bushing, all bushings will require a press to remove and replace. The factory service manual can guide you through if you're the DIY kind of guy.
